Embracing Autumn, Nurturing the Lungs, and Letting Go

As autumn settles in, we notice a natural shift in the world around us. The vibrant greens of summer fade into the golden and fiery hues of fall, and leaves begin to drop from trees. Nature reminds us that autumn is a season of letting go, preparing for stillness, and making space for new beginnings. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this period is deeply connected to the energy of the Lungs and the Metal element, both of which play a central role in our health, our emotions, and our ability to let go of what no longer serves us.

The Lungs in TCM: Guardians of Breath and Release

In TCM, the Lungs are considered the "delicate organ" and are closely associated with the element of Metal. This element is linked to qualities of purity, reflection, and transformation. The Lungs govern our breathing, regulate the flow of Qi (life energy) throughout the body, and play a vital role in our immune defense, known as "Wei Qi." Wei Qi acts as a protective shield, warding off pathogens and helping to maintain a balanced state of health.

Emotionally, the Lungs are associated with grief and sadness, feelings that can often surface during the autumn season. In TCM, the Lungs teach us about the art of letting go, just as the trees release their leaves, we too can let go of stored sadness, unresolved emotions, or anything we may be holding onto that restricts our personal growth. When we cultivate healthy Lung energy, we find it easier to release these burdens, making space for new possibilities.

Supporting the Lungs in Autumn

To nurture the Lungs during autumn, it’s beneficial to focus on practices that encourage gentle reflection, deep breathing, and mindful release. This can include warm, nourishing foods; proper hydration; and practicing slow, meditative exercises, like Qigong. Qigong exercises for the Lungs are particularly powerful, as they work directly with breath and energy, helping us strengthen Lung Qi and support emotional release.

Lung Qigong Exercise: Embracing the Autumn Breeze

This simple Qigong exercise is designed to open the Lung meridian, encourage deep, relaxed breathing, and help you release any stagnation or tension in the chest. Practicing this exercise regularly throughout the autumn season can help you support both your physical health and emotional well-being.

1. Preparation and Posture

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and arms relaxed at your sides. Take a few deep, calming breaths, feeling your connection to the ground beneath you.

2. Opening the Lungs

  • As you inhale slowly through your nose, raise both arms in front of you, palms facing up, as if you’re gathering fresh autumn energy. Let your breath fill your lungs fully, expanding your chest and ribcage gently.

3. The Release

  • As you exhale slowly, turn your palms downward and gently push your arms back down to your sides, as if releasing any stagnant or unwanted energy. Visualize anything you’re ready to let go of flowing out with your breath. Allow your chest to soften, feeling tension melt away.

4. Gentle Twisting

  • Now, bring your hands in front of your chest, palms facing each other as if holding an imaginary ball of energy. Inhale deeply, and as you exhale, gently twist your upper body to one side, letting your arms follow naturally. Inhale back to the center, then exhale and twist to the other side. This gentle movement can help release tension around the chest and ribcage, stimulating the Lung meridian.

5. Completion

  • Repeat the cycle of lifting, releasing, and twisting for 5-10 minutes, allowing your breath to guide the movements. As you finish, take a few moments to stand still, breathing deeply and feeling a renewed sense of openness in your chest and lungs.

Embracing the Wisdom of Autumn

Practicing this Lung-focused Qigong exercise throughout the autumn season can be a transformative way to harmonize with nature’s cycles. Autumn offers us the wisdom of release by letting go, we make room for something new. In the same way, clearing our lungs, both physically and emotionally, helps us welcome fresh energy and inspiration into our lives.

May this autumn bring you clarity and calm as you release what no longer serves you. Embrace the beauty of letting go, breathing in new energy, and making space for the gifts yet to come. Light, peace, and deep breaths to you all as we journey through this season of transformation.
